Oneida Leader Dies Monday At Age of 88

William H. Palmer, 88, died Monday afternoon [Jun. 6, 1960] at his home following a long illness.

Mr. Palmer, oldest son of an early pioneer family, spent all his life in Malad Valley. He was an active civic and church leader, developed his ranch into a good producing unit and served on many farm and community boards and committees. He was mayor of Malad for two terms in the early 1900’s, chairman of the Oneida county Board of Commissioners for two terms, and served on both the city council and board of commissioners. A stockman and sheep rancher, he was chairman of the board of directors of the St. John Irrigation Co. for many years.

Mr. Palmer was the last surviving member of the original organizers of the First National Bank of Malad who still retained stock in the bank.

Receiving only a limited education himself in the early schools in the county, Mr. Palmer and his wife believed in the advantages of education and five of their eight children were graduated from the University of Idaho at Moscow. One daughter is a graduated nurse and the other two children were graduated from Utah State Agriculture College, Logan. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer were made honorary alumni of the university of Idaho.

Mr. Palmer served as a member of the Malad Stake High Council under three stake presidencies; was superintendent of the First Ward Sunday School for many years. He was a High Priest in the L.D.S. Church.

Mr. Palmer was born May 10, 1872, at Malad, the oldest son of Joseph and Maria Gardner Palmer. He married Catherine Jones Nov. 3, 1897, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Mrs. Palmer died March 5, 1950. A daughter, Mrs. Henry D. (Phyllis) Jones, died Sept. 18, 1946.

Surviving are three sons and four daughters: Jenkin L. Palmer, Malad; William Wendell Palmer, Bemidji, Minn.; Ernest J. Palmer, Reno, Nev.; Mrs. Milo T. (Della) Means, Boise, Idaho; Mrs. J. E. (Viola) Redford, Caldwell, Idaho; Mrs. Cluff (Marie) Petty, Swan Lake, Idaho; Mrs. Joseph (Catherine) Pearl, Great Neck, Long Island, N. Y.; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters: Joseph Palmer, Mrs. Hugh M. Jones, Mrs. Hugh Evans, Mrs. Lizzie Illum, all of Malad; John G. Palmer, Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Marie Hunsaker, Wendell, Idaho.
