Wendell Dean Whitaker, 2 November 1912

DOWNEY – Wendell Dean Whitaker, 83, of Downey, passed away August 4, 1996 at his home. He was born November 2, 1912 in Downey, a son of Leander Tillery and Mary Ann Parsons Whitaker. He was reared and educated in Downey, was a graduate of the first graduating class of Downey High School, and later had attended college for one year.

On October 17, 1935, he married Lottie “Ona” Dewey in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

Wendell farmed, milked cows and had been a meat cutter. For 25 years he had driven a school bus for the Marsh Valley school district.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served in the scouting program, in the ward bishopric, and as a home teacher. He also was a member of the Downey Lions Club.

Wendell enjoyed fishing, hunting and following the various local athletic events.

He is survived by his wife, Ona, of Downey; two sons, Dennis Dean and wife, Marylan Whitaker of Chubbuck; and Gary Dean Whitaker of Pocatello; two daughters, LaRue and husband, Ardean Higbee of Downey and Randa Jean and husband Gordon Fuller of Chubbuck; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, six sisters and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held August 7, 1996 in the Downy LDS First Ward Chapel, with Bishop Lavern Brim officiating. Burial will be in the Downey City Cemetery.
