WARREN ‘BUD’ MATHEWS

POCATELLO – Warren A. “Bud” Matthews, 71, of Pocatello, former Shelley resident, died Oct. 26, 1992, at Bannock Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 29, 1920, at Shelley, to Heber Charles and Ruth Lucille McBride Mathews. He attended schools in Shelley and graduated from Shelley High School. He also attended the vocational-technical school in Pocatello for two years, now Idaho State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was awarded the Victory medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, a star, and the Philippine Liberation medal.

In 1941 he married Reva Deveraux at Shelley. They were later divorced. On March 22, 1958, he married Glenna Bell Pinson at Elko, Nev. He moved to Pocatello in 1946 and was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked as a switchman and yard master until he retired.

He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in the bishopric, on the high council, as Sunday school superintendent and ward mission leader. He coached Little League baseball, trained dogs for the Pocatello Kennel Club, played Santa for the Railroad Old Timers and was a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Pocatello; children, Tony Pinson of Paris, Brent Mathews of Seal Beach, Calif., Bruce Pinson of Pocatello, Kent Pinson of LaCenter, Wash., Warren Mathews of Malad, Sharman Kay Snow of Salt Lake City, and Luan Pinson of Vancouver, Wash.; three brothers and three sisters, Lewis Mathews, Boyd Mathews and Louise Stone, all of Idaho Falls, Dale Mathews and Alice Harder, both of Shelley, and Marge Farr of Rexburg; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.

Funeral services will be Saturday at noon at the Pocatello LDS West Stake Center, 3444 Hawthorne Road, with Bishop Sheldon Olson of the Pocatello 18th Ward officiating. The family will meet with friends Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Manning Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave., Pocatello, and Saturday for one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Shelley Cemetery.
