Walter Ervin Gibbs

GIBBS, WALTER ERVIN, June 5, 1904 – June 27, 1962

Walter Ervin Gibbs, 58, active worker in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died at the Oneida Hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Gibbs, who was a bishop of the Portage Ward at the time of his death, had served in that capacity since December 20, 1953. Prior to that he was first counselor in the bishopric since February 24, 1946. He was a devoted temple worker, fulfilled an LDS Southern States and East Central States Mission, had been a member of the Malad Stake MIA Board, and served in all the ward auxiliaries.

A community leader, he was town clerk since October, 1948, and was well known as a pianist in northern Utah and southern Idaho, 1923-41. He was secretary of the Samaria Lake irrigatin Company and a prominent farmer and cattleman in northern Utah.

Mr. Gibbs was born June 5, 1904 at Portage, to James Hyrum and Sarah maria Green. He married Thelma Dredge, September 30, 1932 in the Logan Temple.

Survivors include his wife; sons, W. Sherman, Douglas J., Richard J., all of Portage; one grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Melvin, Idaho Falls; LeRoy E., Wendell, ID; Mrs. John F. (Sarah) Conley and Arthur L., Portage.

Funeral services were held at the Portage LDS Chapel with Counselor J. Reed Nielsen officiating.
