VERYL CLAYTON HENRIE

Veryl Clayton Henrie, 94, returned to his Heavenly Father, Monday, March 21, 2005, surrounded by his family. Veryl was born December 31, 1910 in Garland, Utah, a son of George and Lovinnia May Clayton Henrie, the fourth of five children.

He graduated with honors and was also president of his senior class at Bear River High School. He served an honorable LDS mission to Denver, Colorado, and then graduated from Utah State University where he was a member of the National Social Science Society. Being too small for sports, he showed his talents as a cheer leader at U.S.U.

For many years Veryl taught school in the Malad Junior High and operated a dry farm. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and through the years served in many callings. At 75 years of age he was called to serve in the Malad Third Ward Bishopric. He was a devout home teacher and was always 100% in his visits. He also helped many of the widows in his ward.

Veryl learned to play the organ at 75 and enjoyed playing for entertainment. He authored a book called “Treasured Memories”, a collection of stories about his childhood. He was the oldest continuing member of the Malad Lions Club in the state of Idaho (55 Years). Veryl was an excellent speaker and had spoken at many funerals and other functions.

He met Reba Roundy while she was working as a waitress at a café, and they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on June 21, 1939. They were blesses with five children: Carol (and the late DeLon) Archibald, Malad; Verla Jean Checketts, Ogden Utah; Bill Cindy) Henrie, Tremonton, Utah; Clayton Henrie, Logan.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Dee; his parents; two sons-in-law, DeLon Archibald and Dee Checketts; a grandson, Jason Checketts; two great-grandchildren, Jeremia and Miranda Christiansen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the Malad LDS Sixth Ward Chapel, 200 West 400 North. Friends may call at the Horsley Funeral Home, 132 West 300 North on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the funeral home from 9:30 -10: 30 a.m. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
