MALAD — Stephen Longstroth Smith, 81, Malad, died Tuesday in Ogden, Utah of cancer.

He was born Sept. 26, 1903, in Fielding, Utah, to Willard Richards and Melissa Ann Packer Smith. He grew up and was educated in Holbrook and attended Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah.

He married Sigred Viola Johnson Jan 8, 1932, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

They made their home in Holbrook where they operated a grocery store. In 1939, they moved to Malad where he purchased O.P. Skaggs grocery store, thereafter known as Smith’s Market. He also operated a farm in Holbrook.

He was a member of the LDS Church and served as bishop of the Holbrook Ward, president of the Malad Stake high priests, member of the Malad high stake council, counselor in the stake presidency, home teacher, and for 16 years served as president of the Malad Stake.

As a young man, he had served a mission to the Northern states from 1926-28. Later, he and his wife filled a mission to New Zealand.

He served as a member of the Malad Chamber of Commerce, Oneida County Fair Board, charter member of the Malad Valley Mountain Posse, member of the Bear River Commission and of the board of directors for the First Bank and Trust of Idaho.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Robert E. (Beverly) Francis, Ogden; Mrs. Weldon M. (Sonja) Egbert, Bountiful, Utah; one son, Stephen L. Smith Jr., Layton, Utah; three sisters, Mrs. Nan Bennett, Idaho Falls, Mrs. Maude Burton, Malad; Mrs. Ray (Velma) Wight, Ogden; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death six brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Malad LDS Stake chapel with Bishop Clarence Kent officiating. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home in Malad Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in the Downey City Cemetery.
