Youth killed in early a.m. accident

David Smith age 14, recently from Pasco, Washington, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident which occurred about 3:00 a.m. Monday, September 2nd, 3.5 miles west of Malad on the Lower St. John Road. He and his brother, J. J. Smith, age 15, were passengers in a 74 Chev. operated by Larry Ward, Malad. Ward was traveling east down hill when the vehicle went off the left side of the road, over a steep embankment, struck the fence and rolled over about four times.

Both passengers were thrown from the vehicle. J.J. Smith sustained multiple injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Oneida County Hospital. He was then transported to the Pocatello Regional Medical Center by Life-Flight helicopter. Ward was taken to the hospital, treated and released. The vehicle was totalled[totaled]. Deputy Pfeiffer investigated the accident.
