Alvin Smith

Alvin Smith, 86, Malad, died Saturday morning, December 28, 1985, in an Oneida County nursing home.

He was born September 9, 1899, in Morgan, Utah, to Samuel Bailey and Agatha Heiner Smith. He was reared and educated in Morgan.

As a young man he moved to Malad where he was a lifetime resident and farmed in the Deep Creek area.

He married Vera Gleed December 29, 1934 in Brigham City, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized July 9, 1949 in the Logan LDS Temple. She died July 20, 1966.

He was a member of the LDS Church where he was a high priest, home teacher and an elders quorum secretary.

He is survived by two sons, Wendell A. Smith, Malad, and Kenneth Smith, Pinedale, Wyoming; four daughters, Mrs. Bardell (Emogene) Napier, Malad; Mrs. Michael (Verlaine) Nicholas, Granger, Utah; Mrs. Kenneth (Karen) Wharton, Malad, and Mrs. Bill (Donna) Berry, Malad; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 30, 1985 at 3:00 p.m. in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel with Bishop Marvin Hess officiating.

Casket bearers were Dan Thomas, Bardell Napier, Michael Nicholas, Dustin Smith, Shawn Thomas, Ken Wharton, Bill Berry and Jedd Smith.

The family prayer was offered by Wayne Archibald. Prelude and postlude music was played by Iris Blaisdell.

The invocation was given by Henry Gleed followed by a song “Softly and Tenderly” sung by Kathy Thomas, Denise Thomas, Lisa Poulsen, Sherrie Napier, Lyndell Hess and Jeanie Price. They were accompanied by Iris Blaisdell.

His life sketch was given by Lisa Poulsen, followed by a piano solo “Oh, Divine Redeemer” performed by Dustin Smith.

Bishop Hubert Gleed then spoke and the song “Goin’ Home” was sung by Foster and Kathy Ipsen. They were accompanied by Iris Blaisdell.

The benediction was offered by Bardell Napier.

Concluding services were in the Malad City Cemetery with Wendell Smith giving the Dedicatory prayer.

Compassionate service and care of flowers was by the Third Ward Relief Society, Helen Thomas, president.
