Charles Oliver Simpson

Charles Oliver Simpson, 88, of Blackfoot, died of causes incident to age on Wednesday, January 8, 1986, at the Bingham County Nursing Home.

Mr. Simpson was born on June 19, 1897, in Weston, the son of Henry and Sena Fredrickson Simpson. He attended school at Weston through the 8th grade, and then graduated from Preston High School.

He was married to Thelma Boothe on June 29, 1921, in the Logan LDS Temple.

He attended Albion State Teachers College for one year, then taught at Holbrook one year and served as Principal at Swan Lake for two years before returning to the Utah State Agricultural College in Logan in 1926. He studied one summer at the University of Idaho at Moscow, and obtained his Master’s Degree at Utah State University in physical science of education in 1942. He has since done post-graduate work.

He taught at Oakley four years, instructing in math, chemistry and physics, subjects he continued to teach throughout his career. He then taught at Weston High School for five years before returning to Oakley as High School Principal.

Later he was superintendent of the Westside School District at Weston for five years. In 1948, he became superintendent of the Oneida County School District, where he remained until his retirement in 1967.

He has been president of the Idaho Fifth District Administrators’ Association and of the Fifth District Teachers. He was chairman of the Idaho Education Association and of the Fifth District Teachers. He was chairman of the Idaho Education Association’s finance committee, a member of the American Administrators’ Scholastic Association, and the Idaho State Administrators Association, as well as the IEA and National Education Association. He was also president of the Franklin County Teachers’ association. He belonged to Phi Delta Kappa, an educational fraternity, and has been listed in “Who’s Who in Education.

He was a High Priest in the LDS Church, and had served as scoutmaster, Bishop’s Counselor, High Councilor, and Sunday School teacher. Teaching was his major love.

He and his wife served an 18-month LDS Mission to the Central States from 1968 to mid-1970. The majority of their mission was spent at the historical jail in Liberty, Missouri. He also served 7 1/2 years as an officiator in the Logan LDS Temple.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and photography. He was an excellent fly-fisherman and also made exceptional home movies.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma, Blackfoot; three sons, Keith Simpson and Gordon Simpson, Blackfoot dentists, and Ferrol Simpson, Idaho Falls; one brother, Norman Simpson, Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Eunice Burnham, Salt Lake City, Utah; 11 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Neal Simpson, who died in a car-bicycle accident at the age of 13.
