HYDE PARK, Utah – Stephen James Thurston, 94, of Hyde Park, died Saturday, March 26, 1994, at the Logan, Utah Regional Hospital following a short illness.

He was born July 11, 1899, in Hyde Park, a son of Stephen William and Eliza Marietta Hurren Thurston. He married Ethlyn Alice Wood on December 22, 1920, in Logan. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. She died November 24, 1989.

He lived in Hyde Park all of his life. He attended Hyde Park Elementary School, and continued his education in Smithfield, Utah. He also completed two semesters at Brigham Young College in Logan.

He served two terms on the Hyde Park City Council, and eight years as mayor of Hyde Park. He also was president of the Cache County Mayors’ Association for a year, and a charter member of the Hyde Park Lions Club. He was involved in many church activities, including Sunday school presidencies.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Roma Gene and Conrad Alder of Malad, Idaho.; Lucinda and K.M. Nilson of Hyde Park, Utah.; and Stephen W. and Janet Thurston, also Hyde Park; he is survived by 14 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eight sisters, Mary, Dessie, Lydia, Phebe, Vera, Veda, Myrle and Wanda.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at noon in the Hyde Park LDS Third Ward Chapel, 65 E. Center St., Logan, Utah, with Counselor Mark Ashcroft conducting. Friends may call at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, On Tuesday evening, March 29, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Hyde Park Cemetery.
