Glaya Hall Thorpe, (1920)

GLAYA HALL THORPE
LAYTON – Glaya Hall Thorpe, 79, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on February 4, 2000, due to Pulmonary Fibrosis as a result of Lupus.

Glaya was born February 26, 1920 in Portage, Utah, to Ellery and Lena Gibbs Hall and was the 2nd of four children.

She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1938 and was married to William Lynn Thorpe of Malad, Idaho, July 15, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

They started their married life in Salt Lake City, Utah, Glaya working while Lynn attended school. During WWII she worked for the Naval Supply Depot, becoming one of the first women fire inspectors for the Navy. Glaya and Lynn lived in Utah, California, Saudi Arabia and Yuma, AZ, and traveled extensively around the world before finally settling in Layton, Utah in 1991.

She was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings including the Relief Society, Sunday School and Primary Organizations.

Glaya had a musical talent and she enjoyed singing and playing the piano and organ for family and friends. Her hobbies and interests included organized sports, bowling, painting and one of her favorite past times was crocheting, making many beautiful things for her family.

She is survived by her loving husband Lynn, two sons, Lew (Sharon) Thorpe, So. Ogden, Utah; Bill (Kathie) Thorpe, Laguna Hills, CA; one daughter Deborah (Dick) Marquart, Durango, CO.; four grandchildren: Bret/Pat Thorpe, Shane/Angela Thorpe, Jenn/Darren Byrd, Shelby/Guy Evans and Michael Thorpe; and twelve great-grandchildren: Andrea, Jessica, Shealynn, Jordanne, Lindey, Joshua, Alexis, Taylor, Darrien, Heatherlee, Katie and Conner and one sister, Gwenevier Hall (Leonard) Longhurst, Ogden, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donald LaMar Hall and one sister, Helen Elizabeth King.

Her loving hands have warmed the hearts of many and we will cherish her always. Her grandchildren will miss and always remember “Grandma, You Betcha Boots.”

She endured life with a smile and we look forward to being with her again soon. The definition of a grandmother is Glaya.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 9, 2000 at Lindquist Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah.

Internment will be at the Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Cemetery, 4500 Washington Blvd.
