Memorial services for Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Thorpe Hughes, 77, who died Friday, Nov. 15, following an illness of six months, were held Monday at the Malad Third ward chapel with Bishop Hubert Gleed officiating.
Prayer at the home was offered by George Cowley; at the chapel by Ruel Ipsen and Thomas D. Evans. Speakers were Mrs. Ella Palmer, Bishop Charles Williams and Bishop Gleed who gave the obituary. Prelude and postlude music was furnished by Margaret Laws and Iris Barker, who accompanied the vocalists; Eldon Corbridge, a solo, and Leora Brown and Carol Eliason , a duet Thomas Thorpe dedicated the grave.
Flowers were carried by nieces and granddaughters under supervision of the Third Ward Relief Society.
Casket bearers were Daniel Stuart, Jr., Gene Stuart, Darhl Hughes, Leonard Hughes, Rex Evans and Henry Gleed, Jr.
Mrs. Hughes, an active member of the LDS Church, was born April 16, 1880, in Sheffield, England, a daughter of Samuel and Anabel Memmott Thorpe. The family came to the United States when she was five years old. She was educated in Samaria. On Oct. 3, 1901, she was married to Taliesin Hughes, Jr. in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. Mr. Hughes died two years ago.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Stuart, Ogden; Walter T. Hughes, Blackfoot, Idaho; Jesse Hughes, Malad; Mrs. Ila H. Larsen, Montpelier; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ben A. Evans, Malad; Mrs. Joe Gilson, Rockland.
