Rulon Neal, age 80 years, of American Falls, Idaho, died Friday, April 26, 1991 at the Harms Memorial Hospital from heart failure. He was born on February 3, 1911 in Stone, Idaho to William Job and Maria Bradshaw Neal. He was raised and attended school there. As a young man he worked on the U.P. Railroad for eleven years. He met and married Leona Goertzen on August 31, 1940 and their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 1, 1971. They have always made their home in American Falls. For the first few years of their marriage he worked on construction and then started Neal’s Sand and Gravel Company. He ran it until 1953, when he was elected Power County Sheriff on the Democratic ticket. He held that office for 24 years and retired in 1977.
In his retirement years, Rulon continued to enjoy his hobbies of building and yard work. He was an avid hunter and loved going to the hills to get wood until ill health prevented it.
He was selected to serve as Grand Marshal of the American Falls Day Parade and Power County Stampede in 1989. The Neals celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1990.
He is survived by his wife Leona and their five children and spouses; Ron and Carol Neal of Middlefield, Connecticut; Nancy and Joe Lakatos of American Falls; Carol and Ben Cheney of Boise, Idaho; Gary and Joye Neal, Moreland; and Jerry and Linda Neal of American Falls. Two brothers, Levell and George Neal both of Stone,, Idaho; and one sister Jiammia “Sis” Scott of Stone, Idaho. He has twenty two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his little daughter, Darla Kay, his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 650 Pocatello Avenue, American Falls on Tuesday, April 30, 1991 at 10:00 a.m. Bishop Niles Fuller officiated. Interment was in Falls View Cemetery, American Falls.
