Morgan Morgan

Morgan Morgan was shot dead by John Hurst last Sunday night, Jan. 28, 1894. Both men were prominent socially, and both were successful ranchers and stock raisers. Morgan was a partner of Judge D.W. Standrod in the cattle business. He was born and grew up at Malad, a member of one of the prominent families there and a graduate of Princeton University. Hurst, who formerly kept a saloon at Oxford, has lived in the county for more than 20 years.

Hurst, it is said, accused his wife of infidelity with Morgan and Saturday evening sent and asked Morgan to come to his house. Morgan sent word that he would come the next morning, as it was then late. Hurst sent a more insistent message and about 11 o’clock Morgan rode up to the Hurst ranch house. Hurst came to the door with a shotgun and without a word fired the fatal shot. Morgan died about four hours later.

Hurst made his escape to a bunch of willows about two miles from the house, with the apparent intent to resist arrest, but when Sheriff Thomas, with a small posse appeared on the scene, he gave himself up and is now in jail.
