Mary Magdelene Jones Thomas, (1908)

THOMAS, MARY JONES, October 6, 1908 – February 22, 2004

Mary Magdelene Jones Thomas, 95, longtime resident of Malad, passed away on February 22, 2004 in the Portneuf Medical Center West Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born October 6, 1908 in St. John, Idaho, a daughter of David H. and Margaret Rachel Davis Jones. Mary was raised in St. John, attended the elementary grades there and graduated from Malad High School. Upon graduation, she applied to the McKay Dee Nursing School in Ogden, Utah and was accepted. She graduated from there in 1933 as a Registered Nurse. She returned to Malad and was a nurse for Doctors Paul Garst and O.H. Mabey in their offices for 25 years. She then went to work in the first Oneida County Hospital and continued working in the next two hospitals until her retirement in 1985. She was the oldest living nurse in Oneida County at the time of her death.

Mary was a life long member of the LDS Church and enjoyed many callings in the Church. After retirement she labored for 17 years in the Stake Spanish Extraction Program.

On July 10, 1939, she married Espy Lyle Thomas, her first patient who she had nursed back to health after he was near death from a ruptured appendix. They were married in Ogden, Utah, and honeymooned in California. They have enjoyed 64 years of wedded bliss.

She is survived by a daughter Tamara Jo Goddard (Roger), a son David Lyle Thomas, grandchildren Clinton Roger Goddard, Holly Jo Vernon (Scott) and one great-grandchild Michael Scott Vernon, all of Pocatello, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held February 27, 1004 in the Malad LDS 4th Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
