Funeral services were held here Saturday for Mrs. Manilla Morgan Nicholas, who died June 29, in Dillon, Montana after a long illness.
She was born May 15, 1899 at Malad, a daughter of Joseph W. and Annie Fay Jenkins, she attended Malad schools and was graduated from Albion Normal College in 1017. She taught the third and fourth grades in Burley and was married to Ralph Morgan of Malad in 1918. Following their marriage, the couple lived on what now is known as the Joe Ward Ranch. Mr. Morgan died in 1928 and that fall she moved to Boise with her small family and worked for the University of Idaho Extension Service at the State Capitol.
Returning to Malad after two years, she served as Oneida County treasurer for 12 years and on Jan. 23, 1935, she was married to Dewey Nicholas and they lived at Elkhorn until Mr. Nicholas died of a sudden heart attack in Feb. 1948.
Mrs. Nicholas then moved back to Malad and was employed by the First National Bank. She served there for 14 years until ill health forced her retirement.
An active member of the American War Mothers, she served as historian for the Oneida Chapter and was also elected State recording secretary.
She was also an active member of the Malad LDS Third Ward, serving two years in the presidency of the MIA and as member of the Ward and Stake Choirs.
Surviving are three children: Mrs. John (Delma) Ruegsegger, Dillon, Montana; Duane Morgan, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Mrs. Bruce (Theda) Hill, Mackey, ; three step-sons, Wallace Nicholas, Malad; Ronald Nicholas, Pocatello; Mark Nicholas, Minot, N.D.; a brother, Joseph Jenkins, Whittier, California; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Bishop’s counselor Gerald Thomas officiated at the services with family prayer at the Benson Funeral Home being offered by Bishop Phil Gillies. At the Third Ward LDS Chapel, invocation was given by Terrel Hill and the benediction by D. LeRoy Thomas. Speaker was Bishop Hubert Gleed, the life sketch was given by John L. Ruegsegger, and Gerald Thomas gave remarks. Trudy Ward played prelude and postlude and vocal solos were presented by Helen Jones and Eldon Corbridge. Accompanists were Trudy Ward and Patsy Bybee.
At the Malad City Cemetery, dedicatory prayer was offered by Mark Nicholas.
Flowers were carried by granddaughters and the Third Ward Relief Society.
Casket bearers were Keith Hill, Brent Hill, Terrel Hill, Donnie Morgan, John L. Ruegsegger, Loudon Ruegegger.
Arrangements were by the Benson Funeral Home.
