Fire claims elderly woman
SAMARIA – Residents of this small farming community eight miles southwest of Malad were stunned early Sunday when a house fire claimed the life of Mabel W. Davis, 88. She died from smoke inhalation after being trapped in the fire that destroyed her frame home.

Malad volunteer fireman were called to the scene at 3:40 a.m. by a neighbor, but the home was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived.
Oneida Sheriff Lee Pfeiffer estimated the fire had been burning for at least half an hour before it was discovered. It took five hours for the firemen and three units to fight the blaze. A canal running close to the property provided water.

The sheriff said it is believed the fire started from an explosion of an oil furnace in the living room. The home and possessions were a complete loss. No estimate of losses was available.
