Lewis Hughes Died At Samaria Sunday
Lewis Hughes, 76, lifelong Oneida county resident, died Sunday afternoon at Samaria after being ill for the past year.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Samaria chapel with Bishop Carl Evans in charge. Interment was in the Samaria cemetery.
Mr. Hughes was born at Samaria June 26, 1881, a son of Lewis and Mary Ann Davis Hughes. Reared at Samaria, he attended school there and also at B.Y. College in Logan, Utah. He fulfilled a two-year mission in England for the L.D.S. Church. He was a High Priest and first counselor in the Samaria ward bishopric. Mr. Hughes, who engaged in farming, also served as a justice of the peace at Samaria. He married Emma John Smith at Logan, Utah, February 27, 1907. Mrs. Hughes died in 1949.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen James Hughes and David Earl Hughes, Samaria; a niece reared by the Hughes’, Mrs. Marjorie Smith Crossley, Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lorenzo Anderson, Malad; Mrs. Frank Atkinson, Ogden; Mrs. Charles Bowen, San Bernardino, California.
