Officer’s Report

The three killed apparently died instantly when a heavily laden semi-truck and trailer collided with the rear of the stopped Aylworth car.

Davis County Deputy Sheriff Glenn Clary said the Aylworth family had stopped on the southbound lane of Interstate 15 shortly after midnight to give assistance to R. C. Merrill, 171 W. 2nd North, Salt Lake City, whose automobile had run out of gasoline.

As Merrill approached the Aylworth car, the southbound truck carrying 40,000 pounds of meat struck the car, ramming it into the rear of the Merrill vehicle.

Deputy Clary identified the truck’s driver as Kenneth Woordward, 45, Strom Lake, Iowa. All three vehicles were carried more than 100 feet by the force of the impact. The truck overturned and the Aylworth car was crushed between the other two vehicles. Neither Mr. Woodard nor his relief driver, Richard Holtman, 19, Cherokee, Iowa was injured.

Deputy Clary said he had issued a traffic citation to the truck driver for traveling too closely and other citations are pending.
