JoAnn Hutchings Petersen

JOANN HUTCHINGS PETERSEN
Beloved wife and sweetheart, mother, grandmother, and sister. JoAnn Petersen, age 56 of Midvale, Utah, passed away April 28, 2000 at the University of Utah Medical Center, from complications following heart surgery. She was surrounded by her loving husband and family.

JoAnn was born to Stanley Arthur and Velma Luree Steadman Hutchings on November 29, 1943 in Malad, Idaho. JoAnn lived in Downey, Idaho and Los Angeles, California before moving to Midvale in 1949. JoAnn graduated from Jordan High School in 1962. She married Sidney (Pete) Petersen on November 17, 1962, in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple, following Pete’s return from an LDS Mission in Germany. JoAnn and Pete continued to live in Midvale after their marriage, where JoAnn was employed by Walker Bank of Midvale and later Wasatch Chemical in Salt Lake City. Jolyn, David and Janell were born, and when they reached school age JoAnn returned to work in her father’s dental office but always part-time so she would be home to greet her young children after school. She worked at the dental office for her father for more than fifteen years and continued working there after the practice was sold to Dr. Lynn Walker. She will be fondly remembered by hundreds of patients who were treated to a winning smile and careful attention. JoAnn followed in the footsteps of her parents as a faithful member of the LDS Church and served in many positions. She was serving as Compassionate Service leader and as a Visiting teacher at the time of her passing, and she had a great love for the families who welcomed her into their homes.

JoAnn was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, and had an extensive family of adopted neighbors and friends who often received quilts, hand-dipped chocolates, and other hand-made crafts. She maintained close contact with both the Hutchings and the Steadman family groups. She dearly loved her aunts, uncles and cousins and enjoyed seeing them at reunions attended by hundreds of family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Velma Hutchings, and a brother, Richard Hutchings. She is survived by her husband, Sidney (Pete); three children, JoLyn (Don) Miner, David (Jennifer) and Janell; and two grandsons, Jaden Miner and Jacob Petersen. She is also survived by her brother, Dennis (Kitty) Hutchings; and sister Judy (Ray) Sharp.

A viewing will be held on Thurs., May 4, 2000, from 6-8 p.m. at Golf Mortuary, 8090 S. State, Midvale, UT. Funeral services will be held Fri., May 5th, at 11 a.m. in the Midvale LDS 8th Ward, 8353 S. Jackson Street (260 W.) Midvale, UT, where friends and family may visit from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services.

A very sincere thank you from JoAnn’s family to the compassionate doctors and nurses in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Utah Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brigham Young University Scholarship Fund, in memory of Richard W. Hutchings.
