Youth dies in pickup rollover

Tragedy struck the small community of Malad for the second time in as many months Saturday when ten-year-old Jarek Pfeiffer, son of Lee and Jackie Pfeiffer, was killed as the pickup truck in which he and five other children were riding rolled over on a dirt road north of Malad at 3:43 in the afternoon.

According to the report from the Idaho State Police who investigated, Lottie Marie Beal, 34, St. John, was transporting a group of 4-H youngsters in the back of her 1986 Toyota pickup on Griffiths Road about three-fourths of a mile north of Spencer Road when the washboard condition of the road caused her to lose control of her vehicle and roll over.

The children riding in the open bed back were thrown out. Three were pinned underneath, including the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Oneida County coroner.

Those transported to the Oneida County Hospital with injuries were: Frank Beal, 11; Beck Elmore, 10; Kimberly Colton, 13; Jennifer Allen, 11; Shalise Pfeiffer, 11, and the driver.

As of Monday, all had been released with the exception of Mrs. Beal who was still hospitalized listed in good condition with a broken collar bone and other injuries.

The pickup was totally demolished in the mishap.

Funeral services for young Jarek were held Wednesday at noon in the Malad Stake Center.
