HOWARD JAMES JENSEN

OGDEN – Howard James Jensen, 87, passed away August 24, 2011 peacefully with his family at his side. He was born May 10, 1924 in Mendon, Utah. He was the eldest son of James C. Jensen and Mabel C. Ladie. Howard graduated from South Cache High, where he was very active in the FFA program, winning many awards, especially in judging the quality of produce and animals.

In July 1943 Howard joined the Navy holding many positions. After the loss of USS LST353 at Pearl Harbor, Howard was stationed to USS Sherdian. He was in charge of the motor pool, which included picking up the prisoners of war coming home. Howard would help them get processed and stay on guard while the men enjoyed a night in town before taking them to the ship that was to take them state side.

Howard married Elaine Kidman of Petersboro, Utah, June 17, 1948 in the Logan Temple. Howard and Elaine were blessed with five children, two girls and three boys. They spent the winters in Ogden and the summers in Mendon helping with the harvests. They bought their first home in Ogden where they raised their children and they remained in their home until the day they died.

Howard worked at Hill Air Force Base until he retired in 1968. He spent the rest of his life working and fishing at Strawberry Reservoir and spending time with cherished friends and family. He always extended the invitation to anyone that wanted to go fishing with him.

He is survived by their children: Carolyn (Sherman) Bice, Myrtle Creek, OR; Alan (Shelley) Jensen, Harrisville; Doug (Karen) Jensen, Malad, ID; Mike (Tammy) Jensen, South Ogden; Frieda (Mike) Erwin, Layton; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents James (Jay) and Mabel Jensen; one brother Ronald (Ladel) Jensen and his wife Elaine, who passed away in October, 2008.

Graveside services will be held August 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mendon City Cemetery. Interment at Mendon City Cemetery.
