Civic Leader Dies At 88 After Long Illness

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Malad Presbyterian Church for Henrietta (Hattie) Elizabeth Morgan, 88, who died Friday night, June, 1957 at the Oneida Hospital after a long illness.

Miss Morgan was born at Malad October 13, 1868, a daughter of Dr. Joseph Williams Morgan and Sarah Annie Sykes Morgan. Educated at the Malad Presbyterian school, she attended the Acme Business College at Seattle, Washington, and was graduated from Washington Art institute at Chicago.

Postmistress at Malad for four years, she operated an art shop in Malad for 20 years and retired from this business in 1946. Miss Morgan engaged in civic and political affairs throughout her life and held many offices in various organizations. She served as Oneida county historian for the Idaho Historical Society; was a member of the Idaho Joint Legislative Council in 1920; was past president of the Malad Civic Association; county secretary of the Anti-Tuberculosis Association for 19 years; president of the Kensington Club in 1902 and a charter member of the Violet Rebekah Lodge from which she received the decoration of Chivalry in 1919. Miss Morgan served as a delegate to the national Democratic convention held at San Francisco in 1920; was the author of several poems and magazine articles and wrote the song “Girls of Idaho”, which was published by the Noadyke Pub. Co. of Hollywood. She was also founder and conductor Station No. 1, Native Daughters of Idaho Pioneers, Malad, and in 1910 was awarded the Jubilee Medal by the Idaho General Women’s Club.

Surviving are a nephew and three nieces, A.W. Morgan, Twin Falls; Henrietta E. Scott, Long Beach, Calif.; Virginia Forrest, Bellflower, Calif.; Georgia Forrest, Santa Monica, Calif.

The Reverend Bruce Crawford conducted the service at which Griff L. Jenkins was the speaker and also gave the obituary. Prelude and postlude music was played by Mrs. Myra Jean John, and Mrs. Lurline J. Budge rendered two vocal solos. Accompanist was Prof. S.M. Powell. Casket bearers were Clyde Hansen, R.V. Daniels, Caleb Nibert, D.L. Evans, Griff L. Jenkins and Don S. Evans. Interment was in the Malad City cemetery. Those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Isaac McDougal, Pocatello; Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Thornhill, American Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Clark and Mrs. Emily Koons, Ogden.
