Darrald Lee (Sol) Salvesen, 69, of Idaho Falls and formerly of Malad, died March 10, 1997 at the home of his daughter, Debbie Mays, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born March 7, 1928 to Walt and Tensy Wickham in Franklin, Idaho and was raised and later adopted by Orson and Olive Salvesen of Malad. He was a graduate of Malad High School, where he was Senior Class President. He married Donna Jean Smith September 1, 1950 in Malad. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 23, 1963.
He attended Idaho State University, where he was the only freshman on the varsity basketball team. He joined the Navy in 1948 and served on the USS R K Huntington. He farmed in Pocatello Valley on the family farm. When he was no longer farming, he moved to Twin Falls where he was a serviceman for Fairbanks Morse Company, and Toledo, and opened his own business “Sol’s Scales”. He became involved in the recreation business and later worked for Monte Wight Bombardier in Idaho Falls, and became regional manager where he traveled throughout the western states.
He enjoyed sports, leather tooling, motorcycles, and snow mobiles, hunting and fishing, and loved camping with his family and being in the mountains in the pine trees.
He was a member of the Oneida County Search and Rescue, NRA, International Dutch Oven Organization, Eastern Idaho Trail Machine Association, and a member of the Malad Valley Community Chorus.
In 1980, the family moved back to Malad where they lived until October 1996, when they moved back to Idaho Falls to be near family and medical care.
He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held the office of High Priest. He served in the Young Men’s Presidency and in Scouting. He was a counselor in Sunday School, Primary teacher, and served 14 years as Ward Finance Clerk in Pleasantview and Second Wards.
He is survived by his wife, Donna: two sons: David L. (Susan) of Rexburg, Daniel J. (Sandy) of Namps; three daughters, Debbie Mays (Greg) of Idaho Falls; Didi Andrie (Brad) of Idaho Falls; Daralee Beck (Kent) of Idaho Falls; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Tenny Davis (Homer) of Layton, Utah; Carole Nielson (Delmar) of Ogden, Utah; Darlene Wood (Bob) of Bountiful, Utah; brothers-in-law: Delwyn Smith (Marilyn) of Pocatello; Jack Smith (Janice) Ogden, Utah; Sheldon Smith (Kenna) of Malad; his mother-in-law Rosella Smith of Malad. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Joe Wickham and Donald (Bud) Wickham.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 15, 1997, at 12 noon at the Malad Second Ward Chapel. The family will meet with family and friends Friday, March 14, from 6:00-8:00 at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home.

Darrald Salvesen, of Malad, died early this morning, March 10, 1997 at the home of daughter in Idaho Falls following a long illness. A complete obituary and funeral notice will appear in a future edition of the Idaho State Journal.
