Charlie Nielsen

MALAD — Charlie Janus Nielsen, 91, Malad area resident and farmer, died Thursday, April 30 in Malad. He was born April 12, 1901 in Brigham City, Utah, son of Janus Peter and Caroline Koford Nielsen.

He grew up and was educated in Holbrook, married Bertha Ina Petersen, Oct. 24, 1925, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died July 9, 1972. He married Vesta Christensen Facer, April 10, 1973, in the Logan LDS temple. He had farmed and ranched his entire life and had lived in Holbrook and Malad. He had held numerous positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also worked in scouting and civil defense and with the Malad Senior Citizens. He was instrumental in getting the Malad Devil Creek Reservoir built. He was active in the Malad Lions Club for many years and served as president.

He is survived by his wife Vesta of Malad, five sons, Charles, LouDell and Leo all of Salt Lake City, Utah, and David and Elden both of Malad; a stepson, Tim Facer of Clearfield, Utah; two daughters, Mrs. Klea Mae Christoffersen, Malad, and Mrs. Kendall (Helen) Smith, Salt Lake City, Utah; one stepdaughter, Diane Facer, Las Vegas, Nev.; 27 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Neal of Malad, and Myrtle Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 12 noon in the Malad LDS 5th Ward Chapel with Bishop Craig Sperry officiating. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home in Malad this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday prior to service. Burial will be in the Brigham City Utah cemetery.
