Art Hadfield Dies of Heart Ailment Here Wednesday
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Pleasant View L.D.S. Ward for Arta Hawkes Hadfield, 59, who died suddenly at his home Wednesday evening, Sept. 18th, of a heart ailment.
Bishop Roger Facer officiated at the services with family prayer at the home being offered by Wesley Hawkes. At the chapel, invocation was given by Bishop Leo Brown and the benediction by John Roderick. Musical numbers included organ prelude and postlude, Iris Barker; vocal solos, Karen Almond and Leora Brown with Iris Barker as accompanist. Speakers were Bishop Facer, who also gave the obituary; Joseph H. Tippits and Charles E. Thomas.
Burial was at the Malad City Cemetery where Wesley Hawkes gave the dedicatory prayer. Flowers were carried by nieces and members of the Home Culture Club and Pleasant View Relief Society with casket bearers being Walter McDaniel, Russell Peterson, Max Pilgrim, Arthur Tew, Boyd Lewis and Lynn Alder.
Services were under the direction of the Benson Funeral Home.
Mr. Hadfield was born at Smithfield, Utah, July 29, 1904, the son of William and Mary Hawkes Hadfield. He married Eva May Newsham August 30, 1936 at Portland, Oregon.
Receiving his early education in Smithfield, Mr. Hadfield was graduated from Malad High School and the University of Utah at Salt Lake City in 1927 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.
Employed by the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. for two years, Mr. Hadfield then became associated with the Federal Aviation Agency and served for 22 years. He was chief of the Facilities Division, Western Region, FAA, until retiring in 1952. During World War II he supervised establishment of communications facilities in South America, Africa, India and Northern Canada.
Returning to Malad in 1953, he engaged in farming and was a partner in Hadfield’s Ford Agency.
A former member of the Malad Lions Club, he was an active member of the Malad Chamber of Commerce where he served as chairman of the legislative and congressional action committee.
He was an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors are his widow, Malad; brothers and sisters, Miss Eva Hadfield, Los Angeles; Mrs. J.D. (Edith) Simmons, Baldwin Park, Calif.; Rex G. Hadfield, San Mateo, California; Mrs. Walter (Afton) McDaniel and Ralph Hadfield, both of Malad; three nephews and two nieces.
