Alwyn Spencer Hill (85) passed from this mortal existence on July 21, 2010. He was surrounded by his wife of 64 years, five of six children and two grandchildren.
Spencer was born on June 4, 1925 in Logan, Utah to Reuben L. Hill and Mary Theresa Snow. He served as a medic during World War 11 in the European Theater (France). After the war he returned to Logan to attend Utah State where he had met Beth E. Powell, who became his wife on July 17, 1946.
Spencer is survived by his wife, Beth, and all six children: three sons, Gregory (Donette); Michael (Elizabeth); and Donald; and three daughters, Jeanine (James) Leplinski; Maribeth (Alex) McCleary and Rebecca Scheyer. He also has 24 grandchildren and s even great-grandchildren.
Education is where Spencer really excelled. He loved the Gospel, current events and politics. He received his Masters Degree at the University of Wisconsin, taught seminary in Malad, Idaho and later received his PhD in political science from Univ. of Wisconsin in 1960. Spencer taught political science at several universities; Drury College, Springfield, MO., Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, NM, University of Nevada, Reno, NV, and Michigan Tech University, Houghton, MI. He was head of the social science department at ENMU and MTU. He authored a text in American Government and served on several political action groups.
Spencer served faithfully in his gospel callings. He was a dynamic teacher and speaker. He served in bishoprics, was Branch President and District President in Michigan; and worked faithfully in the Salt Lake Temple for eight years as an ordinance official. As a father and patriarch of our family he was at his best. He was readily accessible for blessings, advice and comfort. He was loved by all his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren. He will be kept busy by his parents on the other side, but will be sorely missed by his posterity still on this side of the veil.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 28, at Forestview LDS Ward, 1111 Charlton Ave. 2800 South 1100 East at 12:00 noon.
