Wayne L. Ellis, 73, residing at 433 Sue Road, died Tuesday, February 11, 1997 at 9:20 p.m. in his home from pulmonary lung complications.
Wayne was born January 2, 1924 in Lewisville, Idaho, to James A. Ellis and Della Moses. He attended schools in Riverside and Wilson, Idaho, until his father moved the family to LaBelle, Idaho. There Wayne finished his elementary and attended Rigby High School.
On February 25, 1943, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the American Theater of Operations. Wayne served valiantly for his country receiving the American Theater of Operations Service Ribbons, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, the Philippines Liberation Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Wayne was discharged January 14, 1944, and then reenlisted in the Army Reserves.
Wayne married Verla J. Walker of Pocatello May 12, 1944, after his military training at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord, California. During his inactive duty, he attended Idaho State University nights and worked at the Pocatello Sash and Door Company as an apprentice carpenter.
On September 22, 1952, he received his journeyman’s certificate. A short time later he began his construction company.
In March of 1965 Wayne was asked to work for the Pocatello Building Department, making inspections. He was the Veterans’ Home Administration compliance inspector, and served on the Idaho Building Code Advisory Board for 14 years, serving three years as president of the Intermountain chapter of Building Officials.
He retired from the City of Pocatello after 21 years of dedicated service.
Wayne held many LDS Church positions, including 7 ½ years as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, was counselor in the Pocatello Third Ward Bishopric for two years, and served two missions with his wife, Verla as companion, in Nigeria, West Africa and a family history mission in the Granite Mountain records vault in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He enjoyed his woodworking skills, making furniture for his family, gardening and family history work.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Verla; his children: Raedeen Brower of Roy, Utah; Kerry W. Ellis, of Orem, Utah; Shayla Mae Daniels, Malad, Idaho; Darris A. Ellis, Pocatello; Kim W. Ellis, Chubbuck; Tamra Scott, Pocatello; Lorinda Seamons of Malad; and 29 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorna Collette, Idaho Falls, a brother, George Ellis, Idaho Falls; and a sister, Betty Ferguson Reiman, Ririe, Idaho. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ulale, a brother, James W. Ellis, and a sister, Helen Lorna.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 15, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Pocatello LDS Stake Center, 550 South Grant, with Bishop Jeff Underwood of the Pocatello LDS First Ward officiating. Interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends Friday evening, Feb. 14, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Manning Wheatley Funeral chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave., and on Saturday from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
