Virgil ‘Reid’ Harris, 78, of Pocatello passed away on June 21, 2009 at a local care center of natural causes.
Reid was born on September 7, 1930 in Malad, Idaho, but was raised in Portage, Utah. His parents were Virgil Cromwell Harris and Maude Rees Harris. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served through the Korean conflict in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954.
He married Darlene Gleed, together had five children, Sherri, Lanna, Greg, Jeff and Michelle. They moved to the Pocatello area in the early 1960s, where all the children were raised.
Reid was a lifelong Teamster. He first drove bus at the site and then drove truck for Garrett Freightlines and Pacific Intermountain Express (PIE) and retired from PIE in 1990.
While he was employed as a truck driver, he lived the life of a horse trainer. He grew up on a horse and was very respected in horse racing. He was active in the Pocatello Cutter Association, flat track racing, and was also a member of the Bannock County Mounted Sheriff Posse. His other hobbies were hunting and fishing.
Reid was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He especially enjoyed going to Butterburr’s where he enjoyed his friends.
He is survived by four children: Sherri Julene of Kuna, Idaho; Lana (Scott) Bell of Pocatello; Greg (Leisa) Harris of Aberdeen, Jeff Harris of Idaho Falls; grandchildren: Della, Lehua, Pohai, Andy, Shelly, Tyler, Laila, Brett, Camille, Jason, Brandon, Cara, Josh, Brittney; great-grandchilldren: Kayla, Wylie, Kalan, Randy, Scott, Jakob, Carter, Leland, Dylan, Kyle, Gairimiah, Brooklynn; brother, Phil (Freda) Harris of Bountiful, Utah; and sister, Carol (Lee) Pettingill of Zillah, Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, his daughter, Michelle, his parents, son[-in-law, Randy Buzzard, and grandson-in-law, Randon Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the funeral service at Portage, Cemetery with military honors.
