Viola Palmer Redford

Viola Palmer Redford, 85, of Caldwell, died Tuesday, May 22, 1990, at a Boise Hospital from cancer. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 25 at the Caldwell LDS 4th Ward, with Bishop Galan M[.] Rogers officiating. Burial followed at the Canyon Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Flahiff Funeral Chapel Caldwell.

Viola was born on April 8, 1905, at Malad City, Idaho, a daughter of William H[.] and Catherine Jones Palmer. She graduated from Malad High School and attended Albion Normal. After graduating from Albion she taught briefly at Malad. Thereafter Viola attended the University of Idaho where she pursued a major in music. She was well known for her beautiful voice. Viola was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at Moscow. While a student at the University when married John Edgar Redford better known as Andy. Viola and Andy both took teaching positions at Meringo, Washington. Later they moved to Jerome, Idaho where Andy was principal and Viola a teacher at Canyon Side School. Andy left the teaching profession and worked for the Farm Security Administration and moved the family to Portland, Oregon. During 1945 the Redford’s moved to Weiser, Idaho, where they entered a partnership to form RBR Firestone. At that time Viola resumed her teaching career. She taught in Weiser and after in Caldwell where she retired in 1970. While in Caldwell Viola graduated from the College of Idaho with a degree in Elementary Education.

During and after her retirement she was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions in the Church, including Temple Worker at the Boise Temple. She was on the Stake Relief Society Board and held several positions in Relief Society, Sunday School and Primary. She was a visiting teacher and on call to help those in need.

Mrs. Redford was the founding President of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher’s Sorority. She was honored this past year by the Sorority. They designated “Viola Redford Day” in order to thank her for all the contributions she had made to the Alpha Delta Kappa.

Viola was a kind and loving mother. Her faith in the church and her fellow man abided her during her entire life. We love her dearly.

She is survived by a daughter Joan Redford Lowe of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and son Mack A. Redford and his wife Nancy of Boise, a brother Ernest J. Palmer and his wife Shirley of Boise. A brother Jenkin L. Palmer and his wife Sarah of Boise. A sister Kathryn P. Pearl of Great Neck, New York, a sister Marie P. Petty and her husband Cluff of Downey, Idaho, her grandchildren Holly and Andy Redford of Boise, Ted, David & Steven Lowe and his wife Carolyn and great-grandchildren Karissa[sic], Janae, and Bethany Lowe all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband Andy, her parents, sisters Phyllis Jones and Della Means and brother Wendell Palmer.
