Verlin W. Moon (1923-2021)

On November 17, 2021 Verlin W. Moon returned to his Father in Heaven and the loving arms of his dear wife, who surely ran to embrace him. He was born April 8, 1923, in Malad, Idaho, to Verlorum and Rachel Williams Moon.

Verlin attended school in Cherry Creek for 8 years before beginning high school in Malad. He graduated from both The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Seminary and Malad High in 1941. Verlin married his sweetheart, Ona Tolman, from Honeyville, Utah, on May 20, 1946, in Cherry Creek, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple on April 8, 1949.

Dad was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the years he served in many callings, including being in the Bishopric of the Cherry Creek Ward for over 20 years. He was most fond of home teaching his friends and neighbors.

Family life was always very important to dad. He was raised on a farm in Cherry Creek, and he learned how to work as he labored side-by-side with his father running the family farm – the same farm he would later buy and run with his wife and children. He loved farming with all his heart and instilled the value of hard work in his children. He also worked at the Sugar Factory, Thiokol, and he was an Idaho State Brand Inspector for 18 years, a job he really enjoyed.

Dad loved serving others and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a wonderful example of honesty, and integrity. He was blessed with a marvelous sense of humor and a gift for telling stories. He had a great love for his family and treasured all of the friendships he made over the years. He was always happy, positive, and he truly loved life. He was very proud of his family and felt that we were his greatest accomplishment in life.

In 1971, dad and mother were chosen as FHA Farm Family of the Year for Oneida County. They received the same honor in District and went on to be the FHA State Farm Family of the Year for the State of Idaho. They were thrilled to receive this recognition. In 2010,dad was chosen as Farm Bureau Farm Family of the Year for Oneida County.

Dad became a caregiver in 1975 when mom suffered a stroke. He took care of her for 29 years. Mom passed away on April 17, 2004. During those years his children and grandchildren were witness to a wonderful example of true affection and unconditional love between two people. Their relationship remains the benchmark for his descendants.

In August, 2016, after taking a bad fall, Dad moved to St. George, Utah, to live with his daughter, Jill, and her husband, Craig. They gave dad the best of care and met his every need. They were truly his earthly angels! Our family will forever be grateful for their sacrifices and selfless service.

Daddy was a giant among men. He was mom’s knight in shining armor, and he was our hero. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his example of hard work, humility, love, devotion to his family, and his love of our Savior.

Dad is survived by one daughter-in-law and four daughters: Pamela (Loyd, deceased) Moon, Malad, Idaho, Jan (Thomas, deceased) Sollis, West Valley City, Utah, Jeri (Stanley, deceased) Lott, Hooper, Utah, Jill (Craig) Harding, St. George, Utah, and Judy (Alex) Linton, West Jordan, Utah; 26 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Dad was preceded in death by his wife, Ona; his sons, Loyd and Boyd; sons-in-law, Thomas D. Sollis and Stanley J. Lott; 3 great-grandchildren; his parents and sisters.
