Verl Gleed

GLEED, VERL, May 14, 1945 – May 2, 1973

A former Malad man, Verl Gleed, age 27, was killed May 2, 1973 when the para-glider he was riding crashed into a mountain side above Centerville, Utah.

A para-glider is an ultra-light aircraft resembling a man carrying a kite when it is in flight. The fatal flight took place at Ward’s Canyon Overlook. The fatality was the first in this sport in Utah, although several had been injured.

Mr. Gleed was born May 14, 1945 at Salt Lake City to James and Margaret Hadlock Gleed. He was married to Sharon J. Jones July 30, 1965 at Malad. He was a graduate of Malad High School and a member of the LDS Church. Mr. Gleed was employed as a machinist and mold maker and had lived in Los Angeles, CA and Medford, OR before moving to Bountiful in 1971. He was a member of the Para Glider Club, Bountiful.

Surviving are his widow, a son, Darren Verl; two daughters, Tricia and Gina, all of Bountiful; parents, Mississippi; two brothers and a sister, Brent J., Laurel MT; David, Salt lake City; Mrs. Richard (Donna) Dudley, Great Falls, MT; grandparents, Mrs. Della Gleed, Malad; Mrs. Dorothy Hadlock Glad, Salt lake City; James Hadlock, Ogden.

Bishop Gordon Crowther officiated at the services in the Malad LDS Second Ward Chapel. Family prayer was offered by Max King; invocation, J.T. Thorpe; benediction, Bishiop Earl Gillies. Speakers were Bishop Crowther, who read the obituary, and Melvin Joe Davis. Lonny Gleed, accompanied by Myra Jean John sang two solos. Prelude and postlude music was played by Wesley Crowther,

Raiford G. Benson offered the dedicatory prayer at malad City Cemetery. Flowers were arranged by members of the Malad LDS Second Ward Relief Society, Florence Hubbard, president.

Casket bearers were Dale Atkinson, Bobby John, Farrell Christoffersen, David Jones, David Christensen and Wayne Jones.

Benson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
