Stephen James Hughes

HUGHES, STEPHEN J., April 2, 1911 – October 16, 2004

On October 16, 2004, Stephen James Hughes passed away at the Oneida County Care Center due to incidents of age. Stephen was born April 2, 1911 in Logan, Utah to Emma Smith Hughes and Lewis Davis Hughes. He married Margaret Jones on June 6, 1934 in the Salt lake Temple. Most of their married life was spent in Samaria, Idaho, where he farmed and did carpentry work until his retirement in 1975.

Stephen and Margaret raised six children: Carol (Dale) Daniels, Kenna (Sheldon) Smith, both of Malad, Idaho; Stephen (missing since 1986; Lewis Neal (Ramona), Pleasant View, Utah; Michael Ray (Janice), Marbleton, Wyoming; and Leslie Dean (Claudia), Providence, Utah. He has four (?) grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He and Margaret also helped to raise two of his nephews, Earl D. Hughes, Ohio, and Darhl Hughes, Samaria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse; two brothers, Earl and Lewis; one sister, Emma; a granddaughter, Jamie Smith; and a grandson, Stephen Todd Hughes.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed gardening and loved sharing his hard work with his family and neighbors. He was always ready to give a helping hand to those in need of his expertise.

His 93 years of life leaves his family a legacy of hard work, integrity and memories.

Funeral services were held October 20 in the Third Ward chapel in Malad.
