Shirley May Irvine “Everyone’s Friend”. We are saddened to announce the passing of our sweetheart, wife, mother, grandmother and friend Shirley May Irvine. Our sweetheart passed away in our loving arms March 29, 2010 after a courageous struggle with scleroderma. Shirley was born December 5, 1937 the youngest of nine children to Robert Marion and Grace Davis May in Malad, Idaho. By the age of 13 Shirley had lost both her mother and father. She continued to live in Malad with her older brother for a time until moving to Salt Lake where she lived with two of her older sisters. On June 3, 1955 she married her eternal sweetheart Robert (Bob) Irvine in the Salt Lake Temple. At the time of her passing they had been married for almost 55 years. Shirley graduated from high school and was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she faithfully served in many capacities in Relief Society, Primary, Young Women’s, Library and served with her husband, Bob, in an Inner City Mission.
Shirley enjoyed playing golf, traveling throughout the world and doing numerous handicrafts, many of which have won blue ribbons at the State Fair. Her greatest enjoyment came when she was doing things with her family. Two fine sons were a product from this marriage of which her oldest son, Mike, preceded her in death. Shirley will always be remembered by her welcoming beautiful smile, loving heart, compassionate ways and Christ like example which she shared with everyone. She is survived by her husband and sweetheart, Bob, who stayed constantly by her side throughout her struggles, her son Scott (Michelle) Irvine and four precious grandchildren; McKenzie, Kaitlyn, Zachary and Ashleigh. Brother Donald May, sisters Mable Tufts, Helen Nelson and Wanda Hughes. Preceded in death by her son Michael; parents; sister, Ruth; brothers Joe, Tom and Ira.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at the Holladay 14th Ward Chapel, 4917 South Viewmont Street (2300 East). A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:45-11:45. A viewing will also be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Holladay 14th Ward Chapel. Interment will follow the funeral at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery 3401 South Highland Drive. Our family wishes to extend special thanks to Brenda Marshall, a loving caregiver and Shirley’s close friend. We also would like to thank the staff at Wasatch Dialysis & Care Source Home Care and Hospice. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.jenkins-soffe.com
