Aged Malad Nurse Died Here Saturday
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the first ward chapel for Mrs. Sarah Hughes, who died at her home Sunday, October 31, after a four month illness.
Bishop Thomas D. Evans presided at the service where the following program was carried out:
Invocation, T.F. Budge; solo, Mrs. Kate E. Jones; talks by E.N. Crowther and Bishop Joseph Parry, solo Stillman Harris; talks, R.N. Hill and Mr. Jones of Salt Lake City. Closing remarks, Bishop Evans; solo, Mrs. Margaret E. Jones, benediction, David Hughes of Samaria. Interment was in the Samaria cemetery with D.M. Williams, dedicating the grave.
Mrs. Sarah Hughes was born in South Wales, January 20, 1859. She came to America with her parents when she was six years old. They lived in Ohio for a short time then came on west in 1867 and Mrs. Hughes has made her home here since that time. She married Daniel Hughes and they became the parents of five children, all of whom are living. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Hughes became one of the best known and loved nurses in the valley. She began nursing in 1903 and continued until a few years ago. She was a member of the L.D.S. church.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by three sons, James, John and Daniel Hughes of Malad and two daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Erickson and Mrs. Margaret Erickson of Ogden; seventeen grand children and thirteen great grandchildren.
A large number of out-of-town people were present to honor this greatly loved woman whose life was devoted to service to others.
