Samuel Smith Jr., 81, died September 14th [13]

Samuel Smith Jr., died September 13th at the Community Care Center in Bountiful, Utah.

He was born on June 13, 1897 at Morgan, Utah, to Samuel Bailey and Agatha Heiner Smith. He married Mabel Jensen on March 26, 1921 at Malad. The marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple on October 22, 1931. She died on June 18, 1948. He married Ethel Andersen Atkinson on October 1, 1951 at Salt Lake. She died January 11, 1975.

He had been a farmer in the Malad Valley all of his life and was an active member of the LDS Church where he was a High Priest. He served in the Elders Quorum, as a home teacher, Ward clerk, genealogy leader and Sunday School Superintendent.

Survivors include four sons and two daughters; Glen J. Smith, Ogden, Utah; S. Boyd Smith, Bountiful, Utah; James M. Smith, Parma, Idaho, Gordon K. Smith, Twin Falls, Mrs. Jack (Louise) Brinkerhoff, Mrs. Thomas (Lucille) Laws, both of Malad; 27 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one brother and two sisters; Alvin Smith, Malad; Mrs. Leatha Dilly and Mrs. Leone Haviland, both of North Ogden. Six step-children, Emery Atkinson, Roy; Mrs. Arlene Jacques, Layton, Verlene Illum, Blackfoot; Dale Atkinson, Garland; Don Atkinson, West Jordon and Mrs. Carol Carcia(sic), Fresno, California.

Funeral Services

Funeral services were held September 16th at the Malad LDS 3rd Ward Chapel with Bishop Garth Sweeten, officiating. At the Benson Funeral Home the family prayer was offered by James Melvin Smith and the program at the Chapel included prelude, postlude and accompaniment music, Myra Jean John; Samuel Boyd Smith, invocation.

Speakers were Bishop Hubert Gleed and Bishop Phil Gillies and remarks were given by Bishop Garth Sweeten, Musical selections were sung by Helen Jones, solo; Connie Budge and Lana Esplin, duet; and Eldon Corbridge, solo. The benediction was offered by Gordon Keith Smith.

Concluding Rites

Concluding rites were conducted at the Malad City Cemetery where Glen J. Smith gave the dedicatory prayer. Flowers were cared for by the 3rd Ward Relief Society, June Ward, president. Honorary bearers were the members of the 3rd Ward High Priests and casket bearers included; Jeffery Smith, Thomas Laws Jr., Neil Brinkerhoff, Dale Atkinson, Don Atkinson and Dale Brinkerhoff.
