Roy Calvin Evans

EVANS, ROY C., February 7, 1920 – August 8, 2008

Roy Calvin Evans, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away August 8, 2008 in Bountiful, UT. Roy was born February 7, 1920 in Stone, ID to David Asa Evans and Emeline Mecham Evans. He was the sixth of seven children. At age two, his father died and the family moved to Malad, ID where Roy grew up. He graduated from Malad High School in 1938 where he excelled in football and basketball. He chose BYU and played football and basketball for four years. During his senior year, he met Bonnie Joyce Saville from Salt Lake City, UT.

The United States entered World War II in December 1941 and Roy enlisted in the Navy during his senior year and was called to active duty after graduation from BYU in the spring of 1942. During a military leave and before being shipped overseas, Roy and Bonnie were married on June 18, 1943. Roy spent the next two years in the South Pacific. After the war, Roy was recruited to join the newly organized Salt Lake City Seagulls professional football team where he played during the 1946 and 1947 seasons. From 1948 – 1950 he worked for the Utah State Dept. of Social Services and the Utah State Industrial School. Roy was recalled by the Navy for active duty in 1950 when the Korean War broke out. He spent the next two years in the Navy and 25 years in the naval reserve when he retired at the rank of captain.

After the Korean War, Roy returned to the Utah State Industrial School as principle and athletic coach. Roy continued his education at the University of Utah and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work and Public Administration. Roy spent the next 26 years working for the Davis County School District as the Director of Pupil Personnel where he helped establish the Adult and Special Education programs and then two years as the Vice Principle at Muellar Park Jr. High in Bountiful.

Roy served many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including many years as Teacher’s Quorum advisor, Bishop for six years and five years as manager of the Bountiful Stake Welfare farm.

Roy and Bonnie recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, children, Marsha Moss (Guy), Declo, ID; R. Scott Evans (Claudia) North Salt lake City, UT; Joyce Merrill (Kevin), Centerville, UT; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held August 13 at the Bountiful 41st Ward Chapel. Interment – Lakeview Cemetery, Bountiful, UT.
