On the afternoon of October 14, 2012, at the Oneida County Hospital, with his family surrounding him, our dear friend, Bob Dorius, reunited with his Heavenly Father.
Robert (Bob) Dorius was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 5, 1939, to Edwin Jennings and Elda Hughes Dorius. His family moved to Spring Canyon, Utah, when he was young. During the summers he would come to Samaria to stay with his Aunt Edith and Uncle Andrew Atkinson. Those summers spent gathering eggs, milking cows, feeding chickens, tending the garden and learning to drive the tractor, made Bob the man he eventually became. His family moved to Provo, Utah when he was in junior high school. He completed his schooling in Provo and graduated from Provo High School as a Provo High “Bulldog”. He made lifelong friends in high school and just recently enjoyed attending his 50th high school reunion, the class of 1957. Excelling in wrestling, he won the State Championship as a freshman. After graduation, he spent a few months in California working on the loading docks of the Safeway Grocery stores. It was too busy and too many people for him, and he returned in 1958 to live with his aunt and uncle in Samaria where he continued working on the farm and working other odd jobs.
He married Gail Matthews and settled in Malad and started a family. He continued farming, worked for Glen B. Williams driving the gas truck and worked at Thiokol. He and Gail had three beautiful children, Rhonda, Ed and Merrill. He went into business with Glen B. and they incorporated Williams and Dorius Oil Company. He took great pride in his business and in taking care of his customers, working after hours and weekends to make sure they were provided for. Bob and Gail were later divorced.
On November 14, 1986, Bob was blessed with another son, Landon Craig Dorius and he has been the apple of his father’s eye.
Bob served on the Oneida County Fair Board for seven years. He continued supporting the 4-H Livestock program every year at the livestock sale his whole life. He served as an active member of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as President and Vice President of that organization. He and his committee started the traditional Malad Easter Egg Hunt. As Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, Bob helped organize the Centennial parade in 1976. He worked hard with the Malad Little League program and spent endless hours at the ballpark, working the field, coaching, umpiring and just being with the kids for support. His interest in youth sports continued until his death, and he supported the youth in baseball, football, basketball, softball and volleyball.
Bob loved the Samaria Mountains and he loved his horse, May. He enjoyed spending time in the mountains on his horse – hunting, riding and moving cows, but the most special times were the times he spent on the Samaria Mountains with his sons, Ed, Merrill and Landon hunting and camping. He took great pride in the Samaria Grazing Association pump and water line. He devoted his summers to making sure the line was working and that the cattle had water. Bob also enjoyed a special relationship with the Alder family, working on their ranch for over thirty years and being like a grandfather to Adam, Ashlee, Logan and Jenni.
Bob is survived by his children: Rhonda (Max) Neal, Ed (Mary) Dorius and Merrill (Stacy) Dorius of Malad, Idaho and Landon (Cathy) Dorius of Phoenix, Arizona; three sisters: Sheila (Tom) Brown of Provo, Utah Syndney Worthen of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Stephanie (Bill) Clayton of Lindon, Utah; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and extended family which includes Landon’s beautiful mother, Kathy Wilks, and her children: Colby and Tyler Nish and Jeri Gagon and Nicole Francom and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his Aunt Edith and Uncle Andrew Atkinson and his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 12 noon in the Malad LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 400 N 200 W. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00p.m. at the Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N and again at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10:30-11:30a.m. prior to the service. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the Horsley Funeral Home (766-4330).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bob Dorius Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Oneida County Education Foundation, 250 West 400 North, Malad City, ID, 83252.
