Richard Scott Bennett

Richard Scott Bennett
May 26, 1957 – February 20, 2022

Richard Scott Bennett, age 64 bid farewell to his sweetheart, his children and his grandchildren gathered around him as he passed from this life on Sunday February 20th, 2022 at his home in Downey, Idaho from natural causes after an extended illness.

Scott, as he was known by throughout his life was the seventh Child and a much loved fifth son of William Jean Bennett and Carol Bonnie Evans Bennett. He was born on May 26th 1957 in Ogden, Utah. He lived his entire youth in Ogden, Utah surrounded by a big clan of siblings, cousins, and friends that loved him dearly. His sister liked to refer to him as her tallest little brother. That he will be deeply missed is an understatement, his absence leaves a hole in our family that none can fill.

Scott was married for over forty-three years to the love of his life, Cassi LaBeck. Through their love were created their beautiful daughter Ashley and loving son Tyler. One of his proudest titles was “Grandpa”. In Scott’s final days his greatest urgency was to get home to be with his wife, his children and his grandchildren.

Scott attended Ogden High School in Ogden, Utah. In May of 2017 after thirty-three years of service he retired from the Union Pacific Railroad where he was a Systems Supervisor. This position required quite a bit of traveling which meant time away from his family. On the up side traveling provided him the chance to see many different places and the opportunity to visit his mom, brothers, and sisters living in different states. These visits were a treat for his extended family.

Scott loved outdoor activities, especially fishing, hunting, and most of all spending time with his family and friends. Scott loved get aways at his home in Overton, Nevada where he enjoyed exploring the desert on his ATV. Scott dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of their achievements, he enjoyed watching their baseball games but even more he loved spending one on one time with them doing things he and they loved. His joyful attitude toward life, and his hilarious sense of humor and dry wit made people laugh and smile. He confided in Cassi that he loved smiling. He knew it brought happiness to others. His smile and strength brought comfort to his family during his final days.

Thanks, is not enough to express the family’s deep appreciation to Scott’s best friend Thor Gunderson whom he loved as part of the family. Thor and Scott enjoyed many road trips especially through the Valley of Fire near Overton. Thor’s strong back and kind heart were an immense help to Cassi in recent days in helping care for Scott.

Scott leaves behind his wife Cassi, daughter Ashley (Brady) Henderson, son Tyler Bennett, Grandchildren Brailey, Slate, and Ryder Henderson, Keith, and Remy Jo Bennett. Sisters Carol (James) Bainbridge, Faye (Michael) Whitney, Brothers Ned (Michelle) Bennett, Robert (Joy) Bennett, Larry (Shaunalee) Bennett, Loyd (Pat) Bennett. Sister-In-Law, Michelle Ashely, and numerous nieces and nephews. Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, his mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and two nephews.

Scott lived his life doing things he loved. There is a saying that describes Scott’s life perfectly: Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside totally worn out and proclaiming “Wow what a ride!!”

In lieu of flowers Scott would want everyone to spend time with family and friends, enjoying those stories the “Bennett Boys” love telling. Have a “Shot for Scott” and enjoy your ride!

Celebration of life will be held at a later date

Final arrangements are being handled by the Horsley Funeral Home in Malad Idaho.
