A coroner’s jury reported today that Dr. R.E. Owens came to his death as the result of an accidental gun shot wound here. Coroner Joe Davis conducted the inquest.
Owens was fatally wounded by a slug from an army rifle Thursday, while in his down town office. The inquest brought ut the fact that the gun trigger had evidently caught on his overcoat while he was preparing to remove it from its place in the office. The slug penetrated his skull near the right temple.
Funeral services for the victim will be held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Opera House, The Masonic order will have charge of the services.
Dr. Owens was preparing to make a trip to California to join two of his sons there. His widow and four children reside in Malad.
He was a well known citizen here, having been prominently identified in the civic and community life. He held the respect of his profession and was active in Masonic work.
On June 1, 1908, he married Sadie Little of Morgan, Utah, who with four sons, namely, Richard, Jack, Jedd and Stanley, and two daughters, Helen and Isabel survive him. He is also survived by his father, Richard T. Owens and one sister, Mrs. Ruth McGee.
Mr. Owens was elected to receive the degrees of Masonry in Malad Lodge No. 51 on April 28, 1915. He was initiated April 29, 1915; raised to the degree of a Fellow Craft May 10, 1915; and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason May 26, 1915.
He held offices in the order in a manner that reflected credit to himself and honor to the Fraternity. He departed this life, February 4, 1932.
At the graveside the impressively ritualistic ceremony of the order was conducted by D.P. Jones, worshipful master, the Rev. David Sharp, chaplain, John W. Clark, marshall, assisted by the members of the order.
The following brother Masons acted as pallbearers: Griff Jenkins, R.B. Davis, Jedd Jones, Clyde Hansen, J.C. Tovey and D.P. Evans.
Mr. Owens was a kind father, a good provider and a congenial friend.
