Reta Lavon Nelson, 78, of Logan, formerly of East Garland, died Saturday, March 16, 1991, at the McKay Dee Hospital Ogden of a heart attack.
She was born March 15, 1913, in Samaria, Idaho, a daughter of David Joseph and Ester Katerine Munsee Williams.
She was reared and educated in Malad, and graduated from Malad High School.
She married James Peter Christensen January 28, 1933, in Malad, Idaho. He died July 20, 1937.
Following Jim’s death, she worked at J.C. Penney Company and as secretary to the County Agent in Malad. She moved to Moscow, Idaho, where she worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Pullman, Washington. She then moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where she lived for five years and worked as secretary in the Soil Conservation Service.
She married Walter Marion Sorensen, August 3, 1950, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. They made their home in East Garland and she worked for the USDA-ASCS and Farmers Home Administration as County Office Assistant. Marion died February 25, 1969.
She retired May 19, 1978, and married Douglas L. Nelson, June 30, 1978 in Ogden. They were later divorced.
She served in the Florida Fort Lauderdale L.D.S. Mission from 1983-1984, and moved to Logan in 1986 where she has since resided.
She was a member of the Logan 28th L.D.S. Ward, serving in the past as Stake Primary President, member of the Stake YWMIA Presidency, Junior Sunday School Coordinator, Relief Society Teacher, Stake Sunday School Inservice Leader, Genealogy Teacher and as the East Garland Building Project Clerk. She has served in the Family History Program in the computer data entry. She was an avid temple ordinance worker and held various other callings in all of the auxiliaries.
Surviving are one son and one daughter and their spouses, James G. and Desse Christensen, Salt Lake City; Lenis and Don Carlile, North Logan; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are 3 sisters, Margie Atkinson, Velda Jones, both of Ogden; Mrs. Clarence (Norma) Forsberg, Riverside. She was preceded in death by one brother, Berton and one sister, Katie.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, 11:00 a.m. Fielding stake Center, 4375 W. 15600 N. with Bishop Ralph E. Whitesides of the Logan 28th Ward officiating. Burial is in the East Garland Cemetery.
