Ralph Garst

GARST, RALPH

Lieutenant Ralph Garst, son of Dr. V.P. Garst, was killed Thursday, January 14, 1943 when a Navy passenger bomber crashed at Hensely Field at Dallas, TX. Dr. Garst was notified of his son’s death Friday afternoon.

Lt. Garst was stationed at Ferrying Command Base, Memphis TN, and was en route from Tuscon, AZ, when the crash occurred. Lt. Garst came to Malad January 7 and left January 9 forTuscon to spend the remainder of his furlough with his wife there.

Lt. Garst was 23 years of age. He was born at Terry, MT. He came to Malad with his parents in 1924. He was a graduate of Malad High School and attended the U of I at Pocatello and the U of I at Moscow. He was an outstanding athlete.

Lt. Garst is survived by his wife, father, step-mother, two sisters, Mrs. D.C. Messer, Omaha, Nebraska, and Mrs. Frank Peck, Edmonton, Canada; one brother, Paul Garst, Racine, Wis.

Dr. and Mrs. Garst left Malad Saturday for Tuscon, AZ, and funeral services for Lt. Garst were held in that city Wednesday.

Lt. Garst ws ferrying planes across the Atlantic to Africa just prior to his furlough.
