Owen Daniels Stayner, age 90, passed away September 16, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Owen was born in Malad City, Idaho on February 28, 1919 to Steve and Kate Stayner.
\He attended public schools in Malad City, graduating as salutatorian of his high school class. He excelled in football and basketball at Malad High School where he also graduated from the LDS Seminary program. He remained a devout sports fan and LDS member throughout his life. His family never called him during Jazz games.
He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He served as Scout-master following g his service in the United States Navy during WW11, where he served as quartermaster in the Pacific Theater.
Owen attended Utah State Agricultural College where he was affiliated with the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Leonore Woozlley, also from Malad City in January 1941 in Brigham City, Utah then moved to Inglewood, California where he was employed by J.C. Penney.
Owen and Leonore had their marriage solemnized in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple in 1950. Lenore passed away in 1993.
Owen married Sammie Oldroyd in September 1995 in Salt Lake City. Sammie has been a devoted wife and helpmate, and they have enjoyed many wonderful years together.
Owen was considered an “Ambassador of Peace and Goodwill” both in the world of business as well as in his many callings in the Latter-day Saint faith.
He was employed by General Telephone Directory Company in California, Illinois and Pennsylvania, served in many executive positions, and was considered a pioneer in the development of the telephone directory classified advertising, receiving the esteemed “Vince Lombardi” award for outstanding management achievement.
Owen was a very devoted husband and father and will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife, Sammie, his son Stephen (Phyllis, Scott, Mark (Deena) and Owen (Becky), his stepsons Mike (Tera), Jerry (Laura), and Todd (Debra). Owen had a number of grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his older brother Steven Dale Stayner and younger sister, Donna England.
Owen faced many adversities in his life and often read the biography of Winston Churchill to bolster his courage. His motto was “Never Give In or Give Up”.
Graveside services were held Saturday, September 26, at 1:00 p.m., at the St. George City Cemetery.
