Neil and Emma John Thorpe

Emma Ellen John Thorpe, 89, passed away at home on Sunday, August 26, 2007, attended by her daughters and her grandson, Mark. Her husband, Neil Thorpe, 90, passed away 19 hours later on August 27, 2007 attended by his daughters, his grandson, Mark and Mark’s wife, Sheila.

Emma was born Oct. 21, 1917 in Portage, Utah, and was raised and educated in Malad City, Idaho. Emma worked various jobs during her life, but was mainly a homemaker.

Neil was born September 19, 1916 in Malad, Idaho, and was educated in Malad and attended the Utah State University Mechanic School, in Logan, Utah, during World War II. He worked for General Mills for 33 years after having owned his own coal business.

Neil and Emma were married on December 14, 1933 in Malad and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on Jan. 20, 1948.

They were the parents of five children: LaNee Townsend, Cedar Hills, UT; RaeLene Wakley (deceased) Malad, ID; Gayle Wakley, Tremonton, UT; Neil E. Thorpe, Niskayuna, NY; Rodger John Thorpe (deceased) Malad, ID.

They also have 13 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 28 great-great-grandchildren (with one on the way).

Neil and Emma were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents and by ten brothers and sisters, and Emma was preceded in death by her parents and by four sisters.

Neil and Emma were married for 74 years and were lifelong sweethearts, and will now spend their eternity together.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 4, 2007 in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel, 1250 N. 1100 W., at 12:00 noon. Friends may call at the Horsley Funeral Home in Malad, 132 W. 300 N., from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 3, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the services. Burial will follow in the Malad City Cemetery.
