Former Oneida Man Dies In Salt Lake

Salt Lake City – Max D. Cohn, 83, long-time manager of Lava Hot Springs Foundation, died Sunday (5 Sep 1965) in a Salt Lake City hospital.

A prominent rancher, Mr. Cohn was appointed to the foundation in 1947 after he retired from ranching. He was named to the position by the late Gov. C. A. Bottolfsen. Mr. Cohn retired from the Lava Hot Springs Foundation position about a year ago.

Mr. Cohn was born on an Oneida County homestead near Malad, Dec. 10, 1881, to Meyers and Sarah Gumpert Cohn. While he was still a youth, his parents moved to a Marsh Valley homestead. The homestead had the oldest decreed right on the Portneuf River, dating back to about 1878.

Mr. Cohn and his brother, Jerome, attended Utah State University, then Utah State Agricultural college, in Logan. After they finished college they and their father formed a partnership, Cohn and Sons Livestock business.

Mr. Cohn was active in Republican politics in this area. He was also a member of Masonic, B’nai B’rith and Elks Club lodges.

Under Mr. Cohn’s direction, a six-hole golf course was built at Lava Hot Springs and extensive improvements were made at the State-owned facilities there. A trailer park was expanded twice, pool additions were made and health baths added. The colorful Sunken Gardens were also developed.

Surviving Mr. Cohn are two sisters, Miss Emma Cohn of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Hebert (Ida) Hirschman of Philadelphia, Pa., and two nieces.

Funeral services are pending.
