Mary Ann Barnes Reed, (1923)

REED, MARY ANN BARNES, May 25, 1923 – December 6, 2004

SODA SPRINGS – Mary Ann Barnes Reed died December 6, 2004 at the Caribou Memorial Living Center of complications from diabetes. Mary Ann and twin sister, Margaret were born in Malad City, Idaho on May 25, 1923 to Arthur and Gainer Evans Mitchell. She grew up in Malad and graduated from Malad High School in 1941.

On April 10, 1943, she married Theodore Barnes of Downey, Idaho at Fort Ord, CA. Theo was in the US Army and was awaiting orders for assignment overseas. Together they had two children, Theodore Barnes, Jr. (Mollie) of Bancroft, ID, and Robert W. Barnes (Cheryl) of Idaho Falls. Theo died on October 19, 1952 in Malad.

On September 2, 1966 she married Edmund J. Reed of Bancroft, ID. They made their home in Bancroft where he had a plumbing and farm implement business. They later moved to Pocatello, ID. Ed had one son, Kenneth (Bonnie), also of Bancroft. Ed died on February 27, 1986 in Pocatello.

As a young lady, Mary Ann worked at Allen Drug in Malad and was an operator for the Mountain Bell Telephone Co. for many years. She was also employed at the Dude Ranch Café prior to meeting Ed Reed and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Malad.

Mary Ann loved family and friends and remained particularly close to her best friend and twin sister, Margaret Nichols of Aberdeen, ID. She is survived by her children, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a sister (Zelma) and her stepson, Kenneth Reed.

A graveside memorial service will be held December 20, 2004 at the Malad Cemetery under the direction of the Horsley Funeral Home of Malad.
