On the 25th of September, 2009, under the attentive eye of her loving and doting daughter and son-in-law the guiding light and angel at the center of our family flickered out.
She was born on May 28, 1924 in Malad, Idaho to Warren and Merle Jones. At the tender age of 17 she moved to San Francisco with her sister and brother-in-law. She took a job in support of the war effort as “Rosie the Riveter”.
Margie moved to Utah, and on an evening of dancing at the White City ballroom, she met Joe, whom she described as the most handsome man she had seen.
They married on July 15, 1947 in Evanston, Wyoming. It Dad was the spark Mom was the flame. Mom had a great sense of humor and personified dignity and grave.
In between raising eight children, mother received her diploma from Bonneville High School. She helped support her family by working at the Bon Marche, DDO and Hill AFB. She was a liberated woman before the expression became clichéd. Mom enjoyed her children and always made holidays special. Mom had ofted stated that she would gladly have had 14 children if her Joe would have been willing. (Quoting Margie “You’re darn tootin”).
Mother made many of her and Teresa’s clothes and later made all of Patty’s ice skating outfits. When Mom had finished raising her children, she learned to paint, enjoyed going to lunch with friends and attended Curves on a regular basis.
Surviving are her eight children: Bill (Joyce) Layton; Monti, Washington Terrace; Teresa (David) Stokes, Lake Forest, CA; Christ, Ogden; Craig (Gloria) Ogden; Hal, Pleasant View; Peter (Laurie), Ogden; Patty Gilbert, Layton; and 22 grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Delene of Salt Lake City.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, parents, a sister and her brother.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic church. The family will be receiving guests immediately following mass at the Holy Family social center.
