Malad Civic Leader Dies

John William (Bill) Anderson, 59, of Malad, died Thursday at his home Jan. 10, 1957.

Mr. Anderson was wholesale petroleum distributor for the Standard Oil Co. in Oneida County. He had taught school for six years and had also been employed by the Dives Furniture Co.

He was a member of the LDS Church. He was a veteran of World War I and had served as commander and adjutant of American Legion, Ernest W. Jones Post. He had been a member of the local selective service board since 1950 and had served as chairman for three years. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Volunteer Fire Department.

He was born Oct. 10, 1897, in Wanship, Utah, a son of John Weber and Elizabeth Young Anderson. He moved to Malad in 1910, graduated from Malad High School and attended the University of Utah and Idaho Southern Branch of the University of Idaho. On Oct. 12, 1920, he married Maude Ann Evans in Malad.

Surviving are his widow; five sons and three daughters, John E. Anderson, Malad; William E. Anderson, Downey, Idaho; Dan E. Anderson with the U.S. Air Force in Formosa; Dean Anderson, Twin Falls; David R. Anderson, Grand Junction, Colo; Mrs. Alice B. McCartin, Redding, Calif; Mrs. Helen Browder, Pocatello; Mrs. Marilyn Lusk, Los Angeles; 15 grandchildren, one brother and two sisters, Grant Anderson, Pleasant Grove, Utah; Mrs. Lurline Budge, Malad; Mrs. Lucille Gibbs, Wendell, Idaho.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 14, 1957, at 2 p.m. In the LDS Malad Fourth Ward by Bishop Colen Sweeten. Friends may call at the family home, 174 N. Main St., tomorrow night and Monday until services.

Malad business firms will close Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. According to Keith Jones, Malad Chamber of Commerce president.
