John Robert Gibbs

GIBBS, JOHN ROBERT, February 14, 1888 – May 15, 1951

PORTAGE – John Robert Gibbs, 63, civic and Church worker of Portage, died Tuesday in an Ogden hospital after a six week illness.

He had been a counselor in the Portage bishopric, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a year and a half and was bishop of Portage ward for 12 years. He had been superintendent of the UMMIA and the Sunday School, he had been a president of the 52nd quorum of Seventies in the Malad Stake.

Mr. Gibbs also served as superintendent of the Malad Stake YMMIA for four years. At the time of his death, he was ward clerk of Portage Ward, a position he had held for seven years.

He was a member of the executive board of Tendoy Council of Boy Scouts of America. He had been treasurer of the Portage Town Board since the town was incorporated and he was a member of the committee that improved the Portage cemetery. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in Russia.

He was born February 14, 1888 in Portage, the son of James H. and Maria Green Gibbs. He attended schools in Portage and Brigham Young College in Logan for two years. He was married to Rachael Kloepfer, June 23, 1920 in the Logan Temple.

Survivors are his widow, and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Ruth Bixon, Susanville, CA; Mrs. Karma Taylor and Mrs. Dorine Arington, Ogden; Mrs. Arlene Dahle, Clarkston; Pfc. J.R. Gibbs, Jr., U.S. Army at Chinute Field, IL Pfc. Grant L. Gibbs, U.S. Army at San Antonio, TX; and Calvin Gibbs, Portage; and nine grandchildren. He is survived by six brothers and sisters; Melbin G. Gibbs, Idaho Falls, ID; Arthur L. and Walter E. Gibbs, Mrs. John F. Conley and Mrs. Vera G. Hall, all of Portage; and LeRoy E. Gibbs, Mackay, ID.
