John Franklin Read

OGDEN – John Franklin Read, 75, first white person born in the state of Idaho, died Monday [September 30, 1935] in San Francisco, following an extended illness.

Mr. Read was born June 10, 1860, in Franklin, Idaho, a son of John and Mary Ann Slater Read. He was reared by his mother, his father having been killed by Indians. After his marriage he moved to Rupert, Idaho. He later moved to Ogden, where he lived two years before going to San Francisco. He was a member of the L. D. S. church.

Surviving are his widow in San Francisco, seven sons and daughters, John L. Read of Rupert, Idaho; Archie F. Read of Ogden; Mrs. Myrtle Stearman, Mrs. Eva Howard and Curtis Read of San Francisco; Mrs. Bessie Stearman of Oakland, Cal., and Louis C. Read of Rockland, Idaho; a sister, Mrs. Noma Cowan of Ogden, and three Half-sisters and half-brothers, Joseph Stevens of Slaterville, Mrs. Louisa Bellow of Magna and Mrs. Moselda Alrred of Lavel, Idaho.

The body will arrive in Ogden Wednesday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Lindquist and Sons.
